Default UHF/VHF antenna what works on a JK

Ok guys as I admited in a different thread, I dont have a good 2M/70cm antenna setup. Basically I had an interaction with my rear rack which messed up SWR. I had trimmed a couple of different purchased antennas (ok wrecked them) until I found the problem.

Now the rear rack is off the jeep and I want to give these bands another shot.

So what are the different experiences with antennas on your JK's either good bad or ugly.

I will be in Milwaukee for a bit on Wednesday and can stop at AES and get a replecement, but I dont have great faith in the sales guys there for information.

Please give me your thoughts, as UHF/VHF is not the same as HF. I have HF working great but well the the second antenna line on the IC7000 is not so useful these days.

I would even build my own antenna if it would work good.

Hi, I have a Comet CSB-790A dual band and 102" whip for CB. They both seem to work well.

Cool VHF/UHF Antennas

I use two totally different types of antennas:

- Larsen Through The Glass Dual Band 2m/70cm antenna, which is 30 " long, is installed on the left rear window of my JK. 99% of the time, I attach this antenna to my Yaesu VX-6 HT. It really makes a big difference in HT performance. I have also used it with my Yaesu 7800 and 857D with good results.
This antenna clears my hardtop by 24".

- Diamond NR770HNMOB Dual Band 2m/70cm, installed on an Arizona Rocky Road mount attached to
the spare tire carrier. This antenna, which is spring loaded, is 38" long and breaks down to 5.5"
in about two seconds, when you need to go into your garage. I use this antenna with my 7800
and 857D. The performance is outstanding. This antenna clears my hardtop by 28".

I recommend either one of these antennas for general HAM VHF/UHF use.

I like your mounting for the antenna and the specs of the antenna as it has some gain and is nice and long.

I will look at it at ARS

Check out the Comet CA-2x4SR. It's a nice wide tx/rx antenna so you can monitor FRS etc (if you have a need). I put one on the truck as a base antenna to monitor those Non Ham / Non CB owners that i hang out with when we are out roaming the desert and streams. I would have put the same on the jeep but stuck with an SBB-5 since it's a couple inches shorter and makes it in the garage w/o removing.

Thanks. The mount turned out nice. It would be good to have more separation of the antennas but that is the max width while still being able to open the glass on the hardtop.

Comet CSB-790A dual band is now installed on the JK. It receives real good, no idea on Tx yet as I have not done an SWR check and this needs to be done.
