Default 12v power source in console cubby

Hello guys and gals. I am going to be replacing the entire center console, shifter, and ebrake in my 2008 JKU with the 2011 version. All is going fine and I should have no problems but do have a question. The 2011 console cubby has a 12v power plug in it (cig lighter thing). My 2008 does not have that. I would like to have that function but not sure how to wire it to my 2008. I assume I need to find a 12v power source somewhere to tap in to. Does anyone know the best place for me to find one around the center console? I do not have heated seats.

Thanks!

Paul

You have a few options really.

You could pull it from the existing 12v cig lighter which would work but you would have to watch what you put plug in. If you are charging some cell phones/mp3/gps then you will be fine. If you are running a air compressor and charging a laptop on it then you will most likely pop the fuse as I think it is only rated for 20-30amps.

Second would be if you wanted a dedicated line, you can use the M8 and/or M9 slot (normally heated seats) in your fuse box with one of the fuse taps/add a circuit things, generally 5 bucks at an auto parts store. This would be switched power so only powered when your ignition is turned on.

Other option would be to wire it just to the battery, similar to the driver side cig plug. Constant power in that case regardless if the vehicle is on or off.

I agree with this post, personally I would select the second option, in my opinion this is the safest and easiest option.

thanks for the suggestions everyone. Came across this thing as well. Might not be worth it though.

That would basically be the first option in my list, although you could do it yourself for cheaper. Personally not a fan of those quick clip things, always have them fail after awhile and you can save yourself time just do it right the first time. You can cut the wire and rejoin it by crimping it with a butt connector. No need for any expensive crimpers if you don't have them. Started off with a 5 or 10 dollar crimper and lasted a few years before I upgraded. Squeeze hard and never had a crimp go bad. If its outside of the cabin then I'd suggest tossing on some heat shrink tubing over the connector. Inside the cabin in that area you should be fine without the heat shrink.

I am leaning towards option two. I have not run a wire through the firewall though. Easy job on the JK?

Check out fuse M7. It's for the rear power outlet that the '08s don't have. It's selectable for hot all the time, or hot with ACC/RUN only.

Super easy. There are apparently holes through the firewall but I haven't tried yet. If you pop the vent out on either your driver side or passenger side vent. You can reach in with a finger and pop out the side panel of the dash. There is a hole probably 3/4" big that has foam in it, stick a coat hanger in there and open the hood and you will see it come out right by the cowl. Tape a wire to the end of your coat hanger and pull the coat hanger back into the cabin area. Lines through! I feed all my lines through there on the passenger and driver side.

Edit: Post #6 on this thread https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-s...sahara-164452/ shows a good example of where the hole is.
