Default Adding a sub + amp to the factory sound system

I've done a search and looked a few pages back but was unable to find anything that answers my questions. Does anyone know of any threads where somebody has added a sub & amp to their factory (non-infinity) sound system? I'm not looking to add much, just a 10" sub w/ a small amp to add some sound so that I can hear my radio over the noisy tires in the summer when I have the top and doors off.

I really just need to know what parts I need to get everything hooked up and going.

I recently did the same thing. If you are using factory head unit you need an adapter that splices into front speaker wires and converts it to RCA. Check a local audio place they are in the 10-20 dollar range. And you will need a kit or the supplies to run power and ground to your amp. I think the kit I bought was $100.

I think I can handle that... should the power be from a not always on source like the ignition or straight from the battery? If i'm only going to be running a single sub, do I don't need to wire both front speakers to it do I?

You do need to hook up to both speakers. But the adapter goes in just behind stereo so everything is accessible right there. Also I ran power from battery AND a remote line to a power source that comes on with the key.
Everything I needed came with the kit included instructions. Oh the adapter was separate.

Oh and added a bit of lighting while the dash was pulled out. "thumbs up"!

awww... i was hoping i could be lazy and just splice in behind one of the front speakers instead of pulling the whole dash. Thanks for the advise!

No prob. The center part of the console at the stereo comes out pretty easily. Easier than getting to the front speakers. Just pop that top piece out. Clips in the back. Pry it up with a small flat screw driver. I wrapped mine in a rag so as not to scratch the babyskin plastics they used.

I am having a similar setup installed today, amp, 8in sub on the existing stock radio. Cost is $150 plus and amp and sub, that includes labor, adapter, and wiring at a local audio store.

I had the Infinity OEM sub and Kenwood amp installed locally with the stock system. I have noticed a big improvement in bass. Not that I was looking for any bump, but wanted some low end bass.

I did the same thing. Picked up a line output converter and went with the stock unit. Put the amp under the driver seat and 12" audiobahns. In the trunk.

The LOC adapter (single adapter that turns a left and right pair if speaker wires into a left and right rca connection) uses 4 wires, 2 for the left speaker and 2 for the right. If you're running a single sub, you really only need to splice into one speaker wire set. Also, you can tap into the rear speaker wires which are conveniently located under the plastic trim between the front and back doors, passenger side.

You will need the sub, amp, amp wiring kit, LOC, wire strippers and a few hand tools
