Default Battery Terminal Acid Leak

Awhile back I installed a CB radio. Instructions said to hook the hot lead right to the positive side of the battery. Shortly after that happened, I noticed that flakey, crusty battery corrosion start collecting at the positive battery post. Two separate times, I've cleaned the positive battery cable and terminal. Then before hooking it back up, I would use those felt battery post washers with that battery post gel stuff. Each time, it would come creeping back. What's the fix for this? Was it hooking the CB to the battery, rather than the fuse block? Is the old battery a goner? Is the battery cable ruined too perhaps and that needs replaced as well? Was it something else besides the CB install? Thanks in advance for your input.

Make sure all connections are very tight, and cables and terminals in good condition
