Default Dodge nitro amp upgrade question

Here's a question to anyone that upgraded sound systems that has the upgraded infinity stock system + upgraded to a dodge nitro amp.

I have the upgraded infinity system in my 2010 jeep and I swapped out the JK amp for a dodge nitro amp. My question is....what settings do you have your Mygig on? I have no clue what "mid" is.....i did notice when i put my bass up anything above 5 the speakers made a popping noise during some louder hip hop songs so I have to keep the bass at a level of 3 or 4 at most. Is this normal? Before swapping out amps, I had the bass, treble and mid all the way up to 9 (i have no clue once again what mid is)....and it was not as capable as the new amp, but i was able to crank the volume up pretty loud with no real problems or popping noises....when i turn the bass level back down to 3 or 4 with the new amp the popping noise goes away....i just want to know what you guys recommend as far as bal/fade and the equalizer settings. Is the dodge nitro amp just too strong for the JK speakers?

In addition, I did just order the jk super tweeters from quadratec (not very cheap, but i did not want to be messing around making my own enclosures, etc.) and also ordered 2 651s polk speakers for the sound bar.....i just would like to get these questions answered before upgrading the sound bar and tweeters.....i will eventually swap out front speakers but from what i read, they are a PITA haha.

Thanks in advance guys.

Bob

Hi bob,

First things first i guess, I did this to my 08 sahara with good results. The "MID" you are referring too on the EQ is for the mid-range speaker level. IE the speakers in your lower dash and sound bar are mid range speakers ( no tweeter, no base). As far as the cracking i have heard that happens to some people, luckily it did not happen to me, so i can't be much help there other than to say the stock speakers are crappy and perhaps a switch will fix it. ( I went with infinity kappa 62.9i 6-3/4) in the sound bar so far. The reason i stayed with infinity is for their 2ohm vs. 4ohm compatibility. You can read lots of stuff about this here. Julietkilo actually has an old thread that pretty much breaks it all down for you.

My only other question is, is your jeep wired for a hard top / dual top? If so there is a harness in the back that can be jumped to increase volume output with the nitro amp. ( also a lot of info on that in this forum)

Hope at least some of that helps.

Jeff

Here's the real deal as to what is happening with the Dodge Nitro amp swap and will explain the problems you are seeing.

For early 2008 JK's, Chrysler and Infinity re-tuned the system to give it more impact overall. A problem was found on these early 2008 JK's where digital clipping could occur within the amp on some songs which had higher bass levels recorded in them. Chrysler decided to pull these new amplifier tunings and go back to the original 2007 JK tunings.

Now the way the Infinity amp works is that the Dodge Nitro and JK are the exact same amplifier. When you plug a JK amp into a Nitro vehicle, the amp will see the VIN and see that it is a Dodge Nitro, and load the setting for the Nitro. When you plug a Nitro amp into a JK, then the Nitro amp will see that the VIN is a JK and load the JK settings.

So what is happening is that all the JK amps got restored to the original settings. Since the Dodge Nitro did not have the same static/popping sound problem that particular amp did not get updated. So what you are doing when you put a Nitro amp into a JK is that you are loading the intended 2008 JK settings. Thus, the popping sounds you are hearing with certain songs. If you replace the speakers, you will not fix this problem. The problem is happening within the amplifier before the sound even reaches the speakers. Digital clipping is occurring within the amp. If you turn the bass level up on the radio, then you are increasing the chances of the digital clipping to occur, since you are raising the bass levels where the digital clipping is happening within the amp.

From what I understand the clipping occurs more frequently at lower volume settings. So turning the volume up, could make the clipping go away....and turning the bass control down can make the clipping go away.

That's the real story of what is happening with this Dodge Nitro amp swap. Don't believe any other stories. I have a friend that works for Infinity and I told him about this Nitro amp swap. At 1st he was confused because he said..."The JK will NOT load the Nitro settings, when a Nitro amp is put into a JK." But later we found out, what was really happening is that the Nitro amp never got updated to remove the 2008 JK settings.

So if you're hearing better sound with this Nitro amp swap....that's what the intention was for the 2008 JK re-tuning that occurred. If you're hearing popping/static sounds with certain songs....well, that's a problem that happened during this re-tuning and is why Chrysler decided to go back to the original settings from the 2007 JK.
