Footwell lighting

Hey guys,

If I were to install some LED lights in the JK's footwells, how would I wire them so that they light up when I open the doors? I figured I could hook them up to the dome light wiring but don't know how to do that.

Any help?

It should be the yellow wire with a white stripe.

I actually just completed this myself using 12" LED Flex Strips (Cool White). On the passenger side footwell the right side basically against the firewall there is a big wiring harness coming out from under the end of the carpet it is the only harness there and has tons of wires in it mostly green, purple black etc. There will be only 3 yellow wires in the harness one is yellow with a gray tracer and two are yellow with white tracer (tracer=stripe). Not sure which one could be both or maybe I got lucky (as did the person who told me how to do this) splice into one of the Yellow w/ white stripe wires that is your positive and there are plenty of grounds that you can use on the right side of the footwell (they will be black wires with an eyelid connector underneath a nut grounded to the body of the jeep) you can either simply splice into one of those black wires (I just spliced into the thinest one) or you can put an eyelid connector on the negative wire off your LED, remove the nut and ground it right to the body like they did at the factory.

Test it out see if she works...if it works then your in business if not make sure your splices are good and ground is solid if they are and it still wont turn on when the dome light is on then you need the other Yellow wire with white stripe...repeat and your good.

Once I wired up the passenger side, I simply went on the drivers side with another LED strip (they come with like 20 feet of wire pre connected) snaked the wire behind the dash from the footwell, spliced into my passenger LED wires and your in biz. If you have a difficult time getting the wires behind the dash take a wire coat hanger, cut and bend until it is relatively straight get some electrical tape and tape your wires to the hanger, stick the hanger behind the dash wiggle it around (from the footwell) should be able to go through with ease, once you get the hanger through....your wires are snaked.

If you want to wire any LED's in the rear (I plan on it just not sure exactly where my mounting point is going to be) but I simply spliced into the drivers side LED wires while I was putting in that LED and ran a + and - under the carpet under the drivers seat. Also I think on the passengers side in the back on the B-pillar I think if you remove the molding right by the seat belt you can catch the same harness and wire and tap in from there also.

Tonight I plan on installing an LED hoodlight.

Let me know how it works out for you it really is cake...I am not very confident in my abilities with electrical and usually f-things up but I actually enjoyed this one.

Note.....If you are using the quick splicers (the ones that you slide the wires into and the metal strip is supposed to cut into them and then clips closed) be careful often LED's come with such thin wire that the splicers don't actually splice the wire just goes right into the groove on the metal splice....so you think you are spliced and connected but they don't work....that one can drive you nutz....BTW if you use the flexible strips like I used (9.99 each at local parts store for white, blue/red/green 6.99) they have very thin clear wire...that is often not marked which side is + or - if you use the same ones....when you strip back the wire, you'll notice one wire is copper(gold) the other is Silver. Gold is negative and silver is positive.

Let me know how it works out for you....I'll post some pics for you tonight if I have a chance..You were fortunate enough to get me while taking a crap with my laptop right now lol

Pretty much the same, but I used red instead of white. Waiting on my red LED dome lights to complete the night vision look.
