How is the Garmin Trail guide different from any other GPS/navigation unit?
Does it actually have trails listed, because arent the best "trails" the ones you make yourself
But it would be nice to have some form of trail listed rather than having to go search for a good local

I didnt opt for the Navi/DVD in my new sahara because I figured there was better aftermarket ones. The flagship Pioneer headunit has bluetooth built in since our stock ones seem to be..."unavailable"

The Jeep "Trail Guide" is basically nothing more than a Garmin Quest 2 with Jeep dealerships added to the POI database. (Straight from Garmin)

I own a Quest 1 and love it. (It supports Topo maps, typical street maps (with turn by turn voice), does the "bread crumb trail", is waterproof and runs for like 17 hours on one charge.

Plus, I can get the "Trail Guide" mount and be set there also.

(Some people hate it since it's not touch screen, and doesn't announce the name of the street to turn on. Plus, the Quest 2 / Trail Guide have all the street maps built in so some say it's slower to calculate a route, and also if you go off course. That's turned a few people off also.)

 

Yeah, I looked at some of the PDA GPS setups before I bought the Quest and I liked some of the extra features, but figured since it was going to be used outdoors sometimes that I needed one that was waterproof and since I only need it when I go on trip I figure I'll always have my laptop with me so I didn't need the PDA functions, and then when I figured out the Quest and Trail Guide were one in the same that sealed the deal. Figure one of these days I'll get the mount for it and lose the goofy power adapter / speaker.


I also don't think the Quest 1 is slow either, but a few people have complained that neither the 1 or 2 reroute fast enough when you miss a turn, so by the time they're done rerouting you've missed the next turn it suggests. That's happened to me a few times, but it's never caused a problem. I think common sense plays a part in ones happiness with a GPS, and unlike some people that need the GPS on just to get out of their garage, I've spent years using paper maps, and that knowledge saved me earlier this year in CO. While the Quest was set to no off-pavement routes it didn't listen and took me waaaaay back in the mountains on some gravel / dirt roads while heading to Mt. Baldy trail. It ended up trying to run me through a road that was no longer there, and it simple wouldn't route around it. I had to pull out the Delorme topo map to figure out how to get back out to the main road.

I still love it though.

 

Now that I have my set of Torx wrenches and the soft top off, I'm looking into a Navigation system and ask those of you who may have already bought or have done some research as to which make and model would be good to place on the top of the dash, as I think is more practical and it would work on all vehicles in the hopusehold instead of just one indash unit.
Radio Shack has a few but the sales guys seem very hungry for their commission so it seems that they will point you towards the higher dollar unit w/out a clear explanation ....thanks

I have one(Navigation system) . had it for 18 year now.tells me when to turn-following to close were to park-going to fast to slow....sorry got to go she wants me to do somethimg.

 

Do you have a Bass Pro Shop near you. Their selection is great, and the noncommisionaed sales people knew a lot about their products. Their prices aren't great compared to online, but after all the help they gave me I didn't mind paying a little more for the right GPS unit. The one I have I bought for its saltwater maps, but I am thinking of upgrading the software for the trails.

Couple of questions. The jeep brochure shows a GPS and mount kit (Trail Guide) that looks to be about the same dimensions as my Street Pilot III. It has an integrated speaker too. I really like the idea of getting rid of my "cigarette lighter" speaker and using this mount kit. Questions are, would the Street Pilot III work in this mount kit? and where do I find the mount kit without the GPS?

I called the dealer, and the parts department was no help at all. They told me that the mount kit, is only sold with the GPS unit. Believing that Jeep would be more than willing to take any money that I'd be willing to spend with them, I contacted Daimler Chrysler. Boy what a waist of time that is. I could not get past the first guy. He didn't know what I was talking about, and insisted that the only option I had was to contact the dealer parts dept.

BTW, I called Garmin. Their customer service was great. They knew exactly what I was talking about. However, Mopar manufactures the mount kit, so understandably, they could not help me.

Any ideas out there?
