Default Ham Radio Mount "Location".

I'm going to install a Ham radio in the next 2 months (after I get my license).
I have an automatic so the gear shift in park is way forward. Using the space
in the dash down low is out. I want to be able to remove the radio to use it in
the house. I'll get a second radio in a while but I can't afford to do that
right away.

I don't like the on the dash or over the rear view mirror mount because I work
in an area where I may loose the radio and a window to boot. I do a lot of
freeway and in town driving in Minneapolis and ST. Paul.

I'm trying to find a place to put the Radio so it's visible when needed, where
I can get at it to remove it, and where it will be secure.

I thought of the glove box but I don't think there is enought air flow and it's
out of visual range.

BTW I'm looking at a Kenwood TM-V71A it's a dual band, 2 meter/440, has good
reviews and is in the price range $400 that I can afford. For a new Ham it has
lots of features so I can experement with the various parts of Amature Radio
Packet, Echolink, Voice, etc...

Anyone have pictures of where they mounted their radios in their JK's?

I also have an automatic. I mounted my Kenwood TM271A 2 meter rig to the screw on the passanger side.

Mic is held with a homebrew bracket. Nice thing about the location for the mic is that I can rest my hand on the shifter and control the radio features. Not alot of need to do more than start scans or change memories. programming repeaters and offsets is difficult while driving.

You could try to find one of those 2 piece slide mounts. The kind that makes al the connections when the radio is inserted. Another possability would be to get a ram mount. Those can come apart but you will have to disconnect the power and anteenna seperately.

What is behind that plate below where all the dummy switches are? Could that be removed and fashioned into a flush mounted head unit? Anybody try this? I would take mine apart to see but my ride is still at the plant.
