A 4 AA battery (batteries are series/parallel) headlight with a single LED.

Both are very bright, and burn a very long time. Today's alkaline batteries have something like an 8 year shelf life, so the lights are always ready to go.

I have had better service from that simple arrangement than with any rechargeable light.
