Hardwiring my V1 radar detector. Where can I tap into a 12v wire?
I purchased a 2008 Wrangler X last week and I am loving it. I used to run my V1 detector in my old Integra, but since I traded it, I might as well get it working in my jeep for highway trips. I think I'v figured out how to remove the overhead panels (just pop em off), but I'm not sure where I should tap into the power system. The V1 hardwiring kit doesn't go to the battery or fusebox, but comes with a clamp to tap into any 12v line. I want to tap into one that only provides power when the engine is running.
Any suggestions for what line to tap into and how to get to it?
Thanks.

You could always tap into a fuse in the fuse box or into the wires feeding the cig. lighter/power point on the center console.
Where were you planning on mounting this? I've had a V1 sitting around for months, was going to sell it since I didn't really see any good spots to mount it with front and rear (stupid spare) visibility.
I guess front visibility is better than nothing.

Well I figured I could use the visor mount, remove the metal clasp, and velcro it to the overhead panel. The next best option would be to get a under the rearview mirror mount, but I don't want to spend the money, or have that visible of a mount. A thief may figure since the mount is there, the V1 must be locked up in the jeep. I'v never had rear visability save me anyhow.
I have a V1 too...I decided not to put it in the JK as the previous poster said...no need to speed in the JK. I put it in my truck instead.
But to answer your question....the driver's side cig lighter is only on when the ignition is on. I tapped into that wire for my stereo and it works fine.

Use a firm spatula and pry the bezel off, you can do this to the top center console piece from the back as well, could be a good place to bring the wire in.
No need though really, JKs have stealth paint, completely invisable to Radar.
My radar detectors were only good for warning me that I was about to get a speeding ticket. So I decided to slow down instead.

Pull the panel off below the cigarette lighter and power port. You can barely access the cigarette hot wire (blue/pink IIRC) by pulling it down below the panel it's mounted in into the now open space where you removed the panel. There's another similar wire, but not quite blue/pink (maybe pink/light green or something): Don't use it! Use the T-splice to tap into the blue/pink wire.

Well I tried to hardwire it, or at least channel the wire up the console and through panels but its 30 degrees outside and I gave up when my fingers went numb.
I need to decide if it's worth it to hang onto it for roadtrips, or sell it on ebay because long highway drives is really the only time I speed in my JK. $300 would really speed up getting a brush guard...
