Default Head Unit Question/Ipod Integration

Hello All,

I'm trying to determine if my stock radio has another input for an ipod other than the mini plug input on the front. I have the single disk/mp3 input head unit with the sub. I'm thinking of putting in the Harmon Kardon ipod controller/display and would like to use a direct input and not the FM modulator function. I'm cool with getting an adaptor that will allow a direct connection (other than the front of the radio) and just need to know what chrysler radio I've got and if anyone else has done this integration. Also, I'm curious to see what solutions (other than put ipod on seat, plug into radio) other have come up with.

I've gotten spoiled having 8000 songs to choose from at any given time and have sworn off CDs and the radio pretty much permanently.

On another note, I took the JK for it's first weekend camping scuba trip. Its an awesome rig and perfectly suited for a weekend of scuba diving in the rainy Northwest. I've dove out of 3 Jeeps in the past 12 years and this one is the best so far.

Thanks in advance. Happy Holidays.

Sorry, I don't have mine yet so I can't reply.

I just wanted to compliment you on your avatar. Is that a Sleestac <sp> or whatever they were called from that show Land of the Lost?

Sorry for the off-topic.

I don't have my jeep yet either but I remember a thread that spoke of a direct "line" connection instead of the earphone jack if I remember right the adapter was made by Monster Cable....Mabe a thread search?

Yep here it is https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/show...=Monster+Cable

It was a post by ThrottleJunkie
"Apple does make what's called the iPod Interface. It wires directly to your headunit and plugs in to the bottom charger port. It also lets you control your iPod through your radio which is pretty cool. I had one on my Pioneer flip-out screen until I got rid of the screen. It's a pretty cool gadget."
I hope this helps

Archer,

Link is much appreciated but is still unclear about the availability of an Aux input on the back of the radio unit I've described. Using this would be cleaner install than the griffin/belkin flexible holder and cord coming out of the ipod and into the front aux input.

I know I'm being picky here but I have the above described set up currently and would like something that is a little more permanent in nature than something stuck into the cig adaptor and a loose cord dangling around. I'm on the hunt for a solution and will post my findings when I've got it sorted out.

Thanks!

Default Harmon Kardon Hook Up

If I remeber right, I read up pretty extensivly on the HK hook up. You can either plug it directly to an input on the back of a head unit or you can unscrew where the antenna goes into the radio and place the HK FM antenna in place and then replace the factory antenna cable.

Now... I have never seen the HK in person... I know very little about the mechanics of stereo installation, but I wanted the HK and read all about it and the various means to instal. I did not purchase because you need a pretty decent sized flat spot to hook up the "click wheel". The entire console on the Titan is cupholder, storage bin or shift lever... no place to stick the interface portion. You need to make sure there is a good enough piece of real estate on the JK console to put that part.

What I used was Belkin iPod power adapter with an audio line out. I pluged it to the cig adapter then to the iPod (there was enough cable to sit the iPod in my lab so I could change songs). The audio out is at the base of the cig adapter, right where it plugs in. From there I ran a male/male line (3.5mm) to the input on my head unit (exaclty like on the JK). I bought a 6 footer from radio shack and was able to run it back through the dash and only came out right at the head unit (or as close as possible) . Since I was able to tuck the excess cord in the dash it was hardly noticable. Trust me on this... I am very particular and cannot stand the least bit of clutter being visible in a car.... I will acutally pull over and put something in the truck so it is not visible in the car. Even if it is behind me and I cannot see it, it drives me crazy by being there.

Using the Belkin iPod charger gives outstanding sound... it is a direct feed...

Another problem unless you get a high dollar interface (such as a fully iPod compatible head unit) is that any hookup that uses the factory interface does not show you on the radio what is playing and you cannot pick whatever playlist you want. My wife had the Mini Cooper iPod interface installed at the dealer and it nearly hamstrung you on being able to pick a song. You would have to play random, wait for an artist you wanted to hear... then take it off random and hit forward or back to find the song in artist alphabetical order.

Using the belkin cig adapter I wrote about above, you use the click wheel right on the iPod...

Yeah, I'm in the same boat I think (except I have the 6-CD + Sirius). I'd like to be able to retain my iPod's own interface for picking songs (the Mopar kit, for example, hijacks it and makes you control through the radio knobs -- very annoying). I'd also like to not have that wire dangling down across my dash.

I like the clean look of the clips by Pro-Clip (www.proclipusa.com) and they've told me their JK bracket will be in any day now.

I've also had my eye on things like this:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-RMpV6d5...sp?I=541PXDPKC

Though no confirmation on whether that will work with the JK stereo (I told Crutchfield I had a TJ to make that one pop up). The two things that are nice about that one are that it hooks up through CD changer inputs in the back (anyone know if 6-disc still has those?), and it keeps the iPod interface alive so you can navigate there.

Sorry I don't have more firsthand experience, but this is the stuff I've been thinking about...
