I didn't use the switch that came with my Hella 500's. But most switches with a round back to them fit thru a 1/2" hole.

*By round back I mean that where the wires attach to the backside of the switch, the switch is threaded with a plastic nut.

I sized the back of the switch to a 1/2 drill bit and the switch was bigger. its not a treaded back switch, it looks like a press fit switch. it looks like this.

I used a 1/2" and had to wallow it out a bit to get the switch to fit.

This may sound stupid, but I test drilled a milk gallon plastic lid to make sure the hole was just the right size. I can't remember the bit I went with but it was an easy way to test fit prior to drilling into my Jeep!
