Question Help adding an amp and sub........

OK stereo guru guys. I recently acquired a 10"sub, bandpass box and a 600Watt amp. I'm a complete retard when it comes to stereo installation. How hard is this going to be to install. Should I pay someone to do it or is it something I can handle myself. I've never done any stereo equipment installs. I have the MYGIG system and will be keeping that as my head unit. Would this be a simple "plug and play" install or am I going to need special cables and crap. Thanks in advance!!!!

What is the brand and model of amp? You will connect to it using Preamp RCAs or speaker level inputs. Do you have a factory sub in the back?

If the amp has speaker level inputs all you have to do it tap an installed speaker to supply the amp.

If the amp only has RCA inputs then you will need to use those. I don't know if the MyGig has RCA outputs but worst case scenario is you would have to install an adapter to convert a speaker level output to Preamp. Then you would have to run RCA cables from the back of the MyGig to the amp.

Are there any install shops where you live? Take the amp and sub there and ask for a rough quote. They will be able to guess a price at a quick glance. If the price is low enough that you would be willing to pay it, that can be your fall back plan.

Bad News: It won't be plug and play. There will be some work involved. Good News: It isn't that difficult.

Yes I have the factory sub in the rear. I know the amp is a Powerbass 300.2. It says it has low level line inputs and outputs. Is that good?

You will need one of the adapters to convert a speaker level output down to the Preamp level for the amp. They aren't that expensive. Go to Crutchfield and search PAC OEM-2. This is just an example. Not sure if it is exactly what you need or not. I just have no experience with them. You can tap off of the factory sub speaker outputs.

Let me know if this makes sense to you...

The Head Unit will send sound out the sub channel. An adapter will replace the sub and cut the signal down to Preamp level. From this converter RCA cables will connect to the amp. The amp will boost that and send it out to the sub via speaker wires.

If you put the amp in the back with the sub box, the RCA lines will be short but you have to get power lines from the battery to the trunk area. if you put the amp up near the driver or passenger you have to find room for it AND run speaker wire to the back.

Thanks for all the info man. I'm going to look into this more this weekend. I have a buddy that knows a little about this stuff. So between the two of us idiots I'm sure we'll figure it out. I'll let you know how the install goes.

P.S. Should I (can I) run both the factory and aftermarket subs together or just one or the other?

You could run both. I never had one but it hasn't reviewed well on here so I don't think too highly of the stock sub.

You can, but not sure you want to.

If you need line level converters, wiring kits, and such, I've noticed my local Wally World has a decent selection of such items...and very low $.
