Default Hitch - Electrical Surge question

Hey fellow JK'ers,

I want to get a hitch installed on my 2011 black JK, but had a quick question and could use some guidance.

My father-in-law recently got a hitch installed on his truck and they talked him into some sort of electrical surge protector to prevent a surge from the trailer or camper wiring from frying the truck's electrical configuration (perhaps even the computer?). They jacked him almost $500 for the install with the surge deal.

I've never heard of this and definitely don't want to shell out an extra $250-350 if I don't have to, but I also don't want to chance a potential electrical problem on my brand new jeep!

What should I do? Has anyone heard of or have this on their JK?

It's kinda hard to argue points on safety. It's basicaly worth nothing if you don't ever need it. And it's worth every penny if it has to do it's job. I have an 07 with factory installed tow pkg. And I have no surge protection.

My stepdad has a 40' Beaver Montary RV, thing is beautiful and he really takes the best care of it. we were recently looking at getting a popup an I asked him about this. His recommendation to me was to save my $$ and get a outlet electrical tester like electricians use. to make sure that what you are hooking up to has a proper/functioning ground, picked one up at an RV/camper center for about $20.
