The new alt was only a temp fix, the actual issue turned out to be the ecms ability to control it.
so i added an external regulator.
Alternatorman was the source.

My jeep has been 100% since installing the external regulator.

JScan was very helpful to diagnose the over voltage issue.

I kept the dongle connected while i waited for the light show to begin again, then pulled off the side of the road to check out the voltage seen by the ecm and various components.
You should show low 15v max, really just high 14 volts.

and my battery cooked much of its water off.

i topped it off with distilled water, however
i did a proactive replacement afterwards since i routinely take this thing out to the middle of the desert... lol

If your not seeing that, and your getting the light show, the module that's part of the gauges can also cause the light show.

I believe the overall issue I had is within the ecm or within the connector.

I did need to use hp tuners after the external regulator bypass in order to turn off the battery light.

There is an alternator or battery code that triggers it.
i needed to pull the code via a scan tool (hp tuners or jscan can also do it) locate the code and edit the action to "do nothing" or something along those lines... lol
it has been a while.

I already had the hp tuner dongle for other projects, so i just needed to buy a licence to add my jk.
i believe that was a two module license at $100.
or just live with the battery error light.

Afterwards i also installed some gauges, added three with a jeep logo from summit racing.
one for the battery since i no longer have a warning light, plus I'm not a fan of the mini van idiot light system anyways... lol

i connected that read out into the circuit i added for the relay to activate the external regulator.

in my thought process if the gauge quits i know where to start looking.

Other gauges since the pod has 3 spots, oil pressure, and transmission temperature.

I'll also note that i took every ground and opened up the insulation to really assess.

only a couple grounds needed attention, but they all got a solder treatment using flux as a cleaner as i flowed solder into the connections.

I also had the classic south main auto youtube o2 sensor rotted out ground causing O2 sensor issues.
i replaced a couple feet of wire there.
(South main youtube channel has a nice video about it on a early jk like mine, he goes into some nice detail about it).

Everything sealed up using marine shrink tubing, the kind that has the glue that melts and seals up the connections.

None of it actually helped the issues i was seeing, but they really screamed grounds to me.
it was still a good idea overall, I'm planning to keep this jeep for a long while.

I still have one more little gremlin that i need to fix, some weirdness with the down stream O2 sensor.
doesn't affect the way it runs, but it keeps calling out a ground fault.
And i repaired that wire already.

I'm thinking it's the ecm, but i plan on replacing the sensors with some oem, and maybe toss a new connector at it.
