Default Lighting help

Hello. I’m new to the forum and brand new to accessory switch pods. I just recently bought an Auxbeam 8 gang switch system and a set of Auxbeam 3” 80 watt lights. Here lies my dilema..... the switch system as a whole is protected by a 60 amp breaker. Then there are 8 locations to attach accessories. Each of these are fused with 5, 10, 20, and 30 amp fuses. Two of each. My lights are rated from auxbeam at 80 watts, and come with a wiring harness with a 40 amp rated relay and a 40 amp inline fuse.

By following “Amp Math”, I am under the impression that I could wire these lights to a 20 amp location on my panel by following the math in the wiring basics thread.

80 watts x 2 lights = 160
160 / 12 volt system = 13.333 amp requirement.
Am I following this correctly? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I’m very confused due to the included amp and relay, and electrical isn’t my strength.

Welcome to JKF.. Good group here and possess much knowledge. Whats your Rig? Electrical is not my strong suit either; however, with your Auxbeams with a 40 amp relay and 40 amp in line fuse I presume they are recommending going direct to the Battery.. Not being familiar with the 8 gang switch. I would contact Auxbeam tech support for more guidance; just my thoughts. Keep the forum updated on your solution.

hey. Thanks for the reply. This is for a 2016 JKUR. The Auxbeam switch panel negates the need for the inline fuses and relays as the system basically manages that through it’s own fuse system and breaker. The whole point of the Auxbeam, and similar systems, is to give the end user a clean install and single point location for both hooking up the wiring, and for a nice switch panel in the cab. As far as the manufacturer help, I have contacted them and the “tech” that helped me didn’t know the system well enough to give me an answer I’m comfortable with. She gave me one answer, then when I questioned something else, she contradicted her first answer.

Update:

Got the wiring math sorted out. Just as I suspected. With my pair of 80 watt lights equalling 160 watts and dividing that by 12 volts, I come up with a 13.333 amp draw. This means that putting them onto the 20 amp circuit in the control box is the proper location. I have plenty of safety margin for “startup” of the lights and will be good to go.

also, when wiring to the control box, as long as my draw is within a safe margin of the circuit, I don’t need the included relay as the control box has a dedicated, built in, solid state relay, and the included in-line fuse can get cut out as well. Wire the lights directly into the control panel.
