I've been reviewing the threads about updating the software on the MyGigs. Some seem to regret doing it bc it's a PITA, while others have no issues.
I guess I don't really have a question to the forum, but I am curious why they (Jeep/Chrysler) don't team up with Sirius and offer a satellite delivered update that downloads and installs automatically once you ask it to do so. Apple/Macs do this and it works great. So simple, so easy.
Any rumors of this at all for the MyGig?
Is there a reason why they couldn't offer this? Maybe even charge a small amount for it if they had to?

Not going to happen. (In my mind at least)
If you think people have issues with the OS blowing up installing straight from a cd, (that can boot the device) wait till you start bricking them cause someone is doing an update and pulls into their garage. Or goes under an overpass.
There would be ways around this, have it cache the full update, then run from the HD once it's done, etc. BUT sirius isn't in the broadband service.
Chrysler isn't in the distribution service, etc.
Also most of the complaints you've read were with beta versions.
(Other than fastrat who has signed up for every forum he could find apparently to throw a fit that his sprint phone's bluetooth still won't work)
If you follow the instructions, burn at slow speed, don't turn anything off, the install is a piece of cake. Takes about 10 minutes.
If anyone installed 712 on a JK, I REALLY REALLY REALLY recommend you immediately install 9.713.
Cheers.

what he said...exactly.
but the funny thing is that my local dealership told me a week ago when I was learning and did my first Mygig update that they use the Starscan tool which downloads the latest official software versions for both the PCM and MyGIG, etc. via sattellite and updates the MyGiG...I couldn't help but laugh because I call BS on that....yet ya never know.

Well, first of all, I don't think that the sirius tuner is setup to download data like that. It's just a tuner after all, not an internet link.
And, the update CD's aren't a pain at all. Just find the link to the version you want, download it, burn it to a cd, put it in your mygig system, and wait for the update to finish. Took me all of about 5 minutes when I upgraded to V9.703.

mine should be in the mail today too hopefully. I have the 881 gracenotes zip but when you expand it and go to burn it on a 750m CD it's too big, guess I need a DVD for that one, hopefully Harmon sent both software updates.

It just so happens that that sat is connected to a vpn'd section of the internet.

Lots of places that would UL very little have been using sat for internet for a while. Not a bad solution, especially before broadband was as cheap and had as much market penetration.
(But it would still be the internet basically, just VPN'd to keep Chrysler's network from getting pwned by 13 yr old script kiddies)
gracenotes is easier on a dvd.
