Need help troubleshooting after market radio problems.

Default Need help troubleshooting after market radio problems.

Background information: 2013 jku rubicon with a pioneer double Dinn installed at bestbuy a couple of years ago. The radio has been giving me fits for the past few months. I am trying to figure out if it is the radio or the harness.

Symptoms early on were no sounds out of one speak without a smack to the dash. Then the radio wouldn't turn on. So I took out the radio and made sure the connections were tight on the harness and reinstalled the radio. It worked for a little while then it went back to not turning off and killing my battery everyday. I have been just dealing with it do to lack of time to track down the issue.

Last week I was installing some lights and had my battery disconnected. When I hooked up the battery the radio worked normally again with volume and all. Then it went back to no volume and not turning off. Not sure where to start the troubleshooting. I actually don't like the radio and amtconsidering a Google OS radio. But I really dont want to buy another radio being this one cost 300 bucks. Anyway.... Any recomendations on where to start the trouble shooting. Thanks in advance.

I wonder what kind of radio it is? Could there be a factory reset for it?

If it were me, I'd -
1. Check to be sure the power connections are clean and solid (also if you have a volt meter check for 12VDC at the radio).
2. Check to be sure the ignition switch wire is properly connected, clean and tight.
3. Pull the radio, with power on check the cable/connector to see if moving it while connected causes problems or not.

If those three things check satisfactory, it would be hard to imagine it's anything other than the radio.

It is the pioneer avh x3600bhs. You gave me a good place to start troubleshooting thanks. I had one other thought although a long shot given the symptoms. I wired in a a mini usb charger to my cigarette hot wire. I wounded if it is effecting the canbus. The usb has nothing to do with the wiring of the radio but I am wounds ring if it might effect the radio somehow. I have read about weird things happening when wiring into the canbus system. Now that I think about it I also wired in my Valentine 1 to a switched power source in the rear view mirror. Could those aftermarket in wiring sources cause problems with the radio shutting off? Thanks.

So I went back through and made sure all of the harness connections are good. I am woundering if my problems can be due to me wiring in accessories (extra usb charging port to cigarette) lighter and valentine one to rear view mirror power. I am also woundering about the wariness itself. It's a CHTO-013BB. (BB is Best Buy version). I see now there are better harness out there.

Any thoughts would be great. Thanks.

It's probably not the other accessories wired into the computer. When it stops the power then it's done.

You've checked behind best buy's with though? Some of the people in there know what they're doing and some simply don't. They do require a little bit of knowledge to be a part of the install team but it's not rocket science. My Pioneer install was very easy- match up the colors and crimp. Yours should be similar so long as the installer followed directions.

Yeah so I checked ignition voltage and constant voltage and they looked good. The switched voltage did show some voltage with the key off but it was in the millivolt range. Odd thing after that. I checked continuity in the pins of the harness that would go into the stereo and I was picking up some cross continuity that shouldn't have been present. Then I checked a few minutes later and it was gone. I have a micro bypass wired in to use the stereo video when not in park and think that may be the issue. Haven't had a chance to remove yet. The battery was low during the troubleshooting so I am giving it a good trickle charge to make sure there is no weirdness with the battery when checking voltage and continuity. Will report back. Thanks for the help.
