Default programming keys

My '08 X came with the power windows and door locks, and the key fob opened the doors.

I had the Mopar remote start kit installed by the dealer and it works fine. The kit came with 2 new keys which include the remote start button. They gave me back my 2 original keys, w/o the remote start.

The old keys no longer work. They will start the Jeep, but then it shuts off. Is there a way to program the old keys so that I can use them as backups? Obviously they won't work with the remote start, but i would like to use them as spares.

Any help would be appreciated.

John

The instructions to program new keys are in the owners manual.

Edit: I just looked & According to the manual, once they are programmed, they are done. YOu cant re-program them. ~sorry.

Replacement Keys

NOTE: Only keys that are programmed to the vehicle
electronics can be used to start and operate the vehicle.

Once a Sentry Key is programmed to a vehicle, it cannot

be programmed to any other vehicle.

Jobrien, I have a couple of questions for you. I have a 2007 Sahara. I wanted to install the remote start kit on mine as well, but I was told by the dealer that it would require a second FOB for the remote start, that they wouldn't give me a new key with both. I then checked on the MOPAR website, and it said that any vehicle with the MOPAR secuirty system installed couldn't take the remote start system. "Cannot be used on vehicles with Mopar Security Systems." So, do you know if I can install this on my Jeep, and if so, am I going to get a second FOB or a new key? If I can install it, and they will give me a new key, then I want it. If not, then I'll spend my money somewhere else. Thanks in advance for the help.

David;

There are probably different "security systems" available. My widow sticker shows a security sytsem installed, but it is just the key has the microchip and the horn beeps if someone opens a door. The real security systems include more features. You would have to find out what system they are referring to.

The remote start kit I ordered is 82211437-AC and it cost me $189.20 for the kit, plus installation. It includes 2 new keys that have to be cut and programmed for the vehicle. The parts guy printed out a copy of the installation instructions for me, which also includes a "what's included" list.

I think there was another kit available, which did not include the keys, but they gave you a seperate fob for the remote start. I don't know what the deciding factors are as to which system you get.

The kit comes with a hood switch, which connects into the TIPM. Maybe with an installed alarm system this hood switch is already there, and would interfere with the remote start? Just a guess on my part. I would suggest going to the parts department and asking to see what is available, and what the restrictions are.

Mine works great, and I think the range is greater for the door unlock feature over the standard installation.

John, thanks for the info. I will swing by and talk to the guys in parts again. It sounds like they may have more options available to me now, than they did when I first asked about it. The remote start would be nice.
