Spare key
Bought my Jeep used and only received one key. I bought an extra key from allthingsjeep.com but would like to avoid paying the dealer $90 to cut and program it for me. The program instructions say I have to have two keys to program a third. Can't I just put my already programed Jeep key in twice. Please advise.
No one key is one key, each key has a unique signature. If you had two you could make a third. I would go the dealer that you bought if from and have them do it for you. If they have any hope of getting more business from you they will do it for nothing.
I purchased my 07 used and they tried the same thing with me. It was after closing, I was tiered and didn't fuss thinking I'll get one cut at Walmart for short money. When I found out the price I was no way paying for that. I waited until about 2:00 on Saturday afternoon, walked into the showroom, and just kept arguing louder and louder until the sales manager said, "OK". I gave them my trade with four programed keys so I wasn't taking no for an answer. He tried a few times to get me out of the showroom and into his office. This is just wrong and shouldn't be allowed. I can see dealers holding back a key just to make more money. It's BS! A vehicle should come standard with two keys period. Good luck.
Most locksmiths can program the key for you for about half what the dealership charges. Once you get two keys, buy a couple more from ikeyless or some other site, get them cut by a locksmith for about 2 bucks apiece and program them yourself.
