Default Speaker Recommendations

I have the non-infinity stock radio on my 09 X, and I just order the Pioneer AVIC U310BT headunit. I'm sure I'll have my hands full installing this, but of course it's got me thinking about what to do next and the obvious thing is speakers.

I really don't need much, and definitely don't need a sub. I'm interested in just a step up from the crappy stock speakers. I'm looking at a component setup for the front, and 2-ways for the roll bar. Does anyone have recommendations to replace all of these for under $300? I'm worried about the tweeter fit, so any prior experiences on these would be nice. Also, will I need a new amp to drive new speakers? I'd really rather not deal with an amp.

I just put the Polk db651 6.5" speakers in all four locations (obviously not the tweeters) and they sound very nice. Now, they are clearly not the highest end speakers -- and you can certainly spend a bunch more -- but they sound great for the $59/pr delivered that I paid at Amaz**. They fit perfectly in both locations with stock covers, so no worries about installation. They are also "marine certified" so they should be good for some topless fun. Anyway, that's $120 for the speakers. I would recommend a sub, but you don't want that.

An amp is helpful to add headroom to your sound, but it sounds like you don't want that either.

If you get a good recommendation on nice, smooth tweeters that fit in the stock location, I am interested to hear how they sound. That's my next step.

Kenwood KFC-P708. Component speakers. The tweeters fits in the dash with no problem. The 6 1/2" speakers bolted right into the dash and roll bar. I did not pu tthe second set of tweeters in the roll bar. The set includes crossovers with 0db, -3db and -6db. On 0db all I could hear up front were the tweeters. I had to set them down at -3db.

Wow! Just did a price search and WalMart has them for $105.

I had the infinity system and changed all factory speakers to Polk db. Very pleased with the sound. With the dbs you shouldn't need an amp the aftermarket radio probably puts out enough watts. I did install a ten inch under the back seat two weeks later but I like bass.

Did you have to get a speaker wire harness to install these, or can you just use the factory wiring? Also, you say you didn't use the tweeters in those... did you remove them yourself? Does the factory speakers only have tweeters up on the dash, and then all 4 speakers don't normally have tweeters?

Since you will have the H/U driving the speakers you shouldn't need to run new wires.

You will have to get a harness for the H/U but any one you get to connect it to the Jeep will have the speaker outputs built into it already.

The only factory tweeters are up in the dash. They split off from the main speakers there and have a small capacitor/crossover built into the back of the speaker itself. The four factory 6 1/2" speakers are just that. Speakers. Not component, not two- or three-way.

Alright, here's what I'm thinking. Please let me know if anyone seeing a problem.

In the front, I'm going to go with the Polk db6501 Component package. This includes 6 1/2" speakers and 1" tweeters.

In the roll bar, I'm going with the Polk db651 2-way speakers.

Does this sound like a solid setup?

Yes. this is exactly what i want to do with my JK. I already have the db651's in my roll bar and love them. Although if you plan on using the grilles it comes with your brackets will show but it doesnt bother me, i hate the stock grilles anyway.

I was planning on keeping the stock grills on. Is that not doable with these?

I've been looking at this head unit for my jeep. I'd love to see some pictures of your install.
