Default Stereo/Speaker Replacement Questions

HI everyone, I just picked up my 2013 Sport today and something that i want to do first is replace the sound system.

I took it to a local shop and got a quote. I checked their prices against Ebay and they are actually matching or very competitive.

My concern though is the total is about $1500, I just can't drop that much right away. While their prices are competitive, they quoted top notch gear, so I am wondering if I have some overkill and can "get by" with a bit less. I haven't been in the Jeep yet to really know how loud it is while the top is off.

For example, a pair of Alpine 6.5 speakers and tweeters were 450 ohm peak, 225 each, and RMS was 150/75. Part number was SPV-65X-WRA. What spec did you use? What are stock anyway??

Those are the big nugget as they are $200 each, need two sets.

quoted a major head unit, Kenwood DMX706 at $400, can certainly get less expensive there if I back off on the speakers a bit, but I want to make sure I can hear it all with the top off.

Any advice, help, links to other write ups is appreciated.

Scott.

I just installed the kicker Mopar speakers. They’re plug and play and sound really good. I’m using the alpine i209-wra head unit to power them at a whole 16 watts and they still sound good. I drive top off all summer and am happy with them. No need to spend $200 on a set of speakers unless you’re trying to compete with your stereo. I paid $70 for a set of them. Look up 77kick10 as the part number. Tweeters are 77kick25ab or something like that. Just toss some polyfill in the enclosures and you’re good to go.

If you have a good amp, just about any stock head unit will sound good. Again, unless you’re competing and have a tuned ear on what a good stereo sounds like, you won’t lose a thing by staying with a stock head unit.

So nobody bothered with replacing the tweeters in the dash? Not worth the money? Looks like they are about $70 also.

The tweeters are definitely worth replacing. I haven’t gotten to it yet. The stereo isn’t exactly a super high priority for me, I’m just doing little bits here and there when I have time. However, i am going to use the kicker Mopar tweeters as well.
