Subwoofer Level Control
I just stumbled onto kind of a neat trick, that I thought I should post up, which gives you control over the volume level of your subwoofer (sorta), with a few catches. I've got the standard radio / CD on a 2008 Rubicon, with the subwoofer. I've also cut the wires to my rear speakers, to use them as (stealth) speakers for my Ham (left) and CB (right) speakers. It's an idea I got on this forum, and it works great. The speakers are pretty crappy anyway (fine for a CB), but not so hot for music, so doing this speaker mod is the first requirement.
So after this mod, I initially just put the fader to 'front', since I wasn't using the rear speakers anymore. Well I got to playing with it today, and realized that when I turned the fader all the way to the rear, I got only the subwoofer. Soooo, then it dawned on me that adjusting the fader in between, allows you to vary the ratio of (front) music to subwoofer output, and if it's 1/2 way in between, you're getting way more bass than before!
Assuming that the crossover points / slopes for the subwoofer are different than for the bass control, this also gives you more precise control over the bass. It seems to me they are different, that the subwoofer is considerably deeper bass (as you'd expect), so I have the fader at about R6, and then just adjust the bass as desired. The only other catch is that at R6, you're really turning the front volume down. My volume only goes up to 38, so if you've got a quiet CD or iPod, then it may not go quite as loud as you want it. But, if it's not loud enough for you, then just change the fader to (say) R5.
I love it. I makes a huge improvement in the bass, and still goes much louder than I should be playing it.
If you're thinking of the speaker mods anyway, be sure to check out the subwoofer effect.
