Default Turn Signal Blinking Fast & code B1640

Hi all. Just purchased a used Jeep and am diagnosing my first issue.

2008 JKU Safari
- automatic
- stock
- no LED lights

hazards on - no issue
left turn signal on - no issue
right turn signal on - no issue

parking lights or headlights on
- passenger parking light/turn signal and passenger fender light do not come on
right turn signal on with parking lights or headlights on
- fast blink on dashboard
- passenger parking light/turn signal and passenger fender light do not come on

I am getting code B1640 "Front Right Turn Lamp Control Circuit High"
- I am not using LEDs
- I have switch the bulbs from driver to passenger side to test - same results
- I have pulled and cleaned the connectors in both lights - same results

I am also getting U118A and U118B codes from my Superchips Flashcat. I think those are false reads though because my car doesn't have an Adaptive Front Lighting System. I've tried numerous times and can't get the ignition on/off sequence to show codes on my dashboard.

I have seen a couple references to similar (but not exact) issues reports in other forums. Unfortunately nobody every posted a "this fixed it" at the end. There were references to checking ground wires and running a new ground from steering column to battery.

Anyone run into this before or the B1640 code?

I keep seeing references to grounding points in the engine compartment but can't find a thread/picture that shows exactly where they are. Can someone point me in the right direction for where they are? Seems like checking all those would be a good step.

Default Problem Fixed !

After much work I found and fixed my problem. Actually I had two problems.

  1. The harness to the right (passenger) front fender light had a problem. The connector holding the light had fused to the other side of the connector and created a short. New connector cable from Jeep parts ($20) and problem solved. This was the easy fix.
  2. The right (passenger) front parking light would not turn work if the parking lights AND blinker were on at same time. It would actually create a condition where it wouldn't work at all if either was used individually.

I tried all sorts of diagnostics to narrow down the issue. I switch the light bulbs, no difference. I switched the sockets themselves, no difference. I finally cut the 3 wires (ground, parking light, blinker) to the connector. I tested against the car battery. All works ! So... there is a line issue somewhere. I had already tested voltages in the connector wires. All looked good there. I had double checked all the ground spots on that side of engine compartment. All good.

Was beginning to think it was something in the TIPM itself.

It was the ground wire to that connector. There must be break or something higher up in the harness. I left the other two wires connected, alligator clipped the ground to the frame - PRESTO - everything was now working as expected.

Ran a splice from the fender light ground to the parking light ground for a permanent solution just in case there was feedback occurring to the TIPM.

I am having the EXACT same issues with the Front Passenger Turn Signal/Parking Light my Passenger Fender Light is perfect still. Is there a replacement harness that could be purchased or does the harness tie in directly to the TIPM, I'm accustomed to hack jobs having owned a Volvo in the past and the various Electrical Gremlins(not saying your fix is a hack whatsoever) but I would like to replace the harness if possible to maintain close to stock wiring!
