Howdy, I bought a newish 10,000 HF winch last night for $100. The man I bought it from didn't know how to wire it up correctly, so he went out and bought a fancy 12,000 lb Warn winch that's dummy-proof.

It didn't come with any controls or wiring. Luckily I have quite a bit of wire laying around the garage, so I was able to makeshift some cables. We had to unspool the cable and respool it by pulling my Jeep to my dad's truck. We got power by connecting the winch to a battery, then connecting the battery to my Jeep's battery with my Jeep running. Here's how we did it:

Granted I don't feel like pulling out the jumper cables everytime I need to winch something, So I need a way to wire this thing up as cheaply and efficiently as possible.

I got it spooled up just fine. My next predicament is the amount of room in front of and behind the winch. There's not much at all:

Here's how it looks this morning:

Lol, was my first thought as well. But the guy pulled up with his Jeep, we helped him unbolted it from his Jeep, and put it in the back of mine. Said he needed to keep his wires for his new winch.

I knew i had plenty of wires back home. I didn't see a solenoid or anything. It looked like he had it wired to a BIG switch in his cab then directly to his battery. As i said, this guy wasn't the brightest Crayon. He was nice, but stupid.

For the controls
You can purchase a pendant and make it so that it plugs directly into the winch.
You can wire the controls to push buttons inside the cab.
Or you can make it so the pendant plugs into the winch or inside the cab either one.

For the main power
Your going to need some heavy cable and an in-line fuse. Biggest cable you can get your hands on. Fuse will depend on the specifications of the winch.

You can purchase a pre-made pendant from a supplier like "Grainger"
You can purchase Military Grade male / female plugs from your local electrical supply.
You can get automotive grade control wires from your local automotive parts store.

Then you just have to put everything together.
