Default Zip ties versus going inside the hoop

Just ordered my JCR Dagger Stubby. I also have the grill hoop with light tabs. I don't like the idea of zip ties on it - which leads to drill holes and fishing the wires through the grill hoop.

What has been your experience with it? How big a hole to drill, problems later on ...

Thanks!

I would drill and run the wires through. A 1/4 inch hole should be large enough to fish the wires through and not harm the structural integrity (fancy words) of the hoop. I've done this before on roll bars and the hard top on my boat.
Make sure you de-bur the hole real good so it doesn't cut through the wires later on.

I always wondered why they didn't make some provision for this? Especially if they have light tabs! Every manufacturer surely must know people want a clean looking setup.

I zip tie because I don't want to run the risk of having another spot where rust can form over time and is basically impossible to get to. I'd run the wires if you drill and seal that hole up with silicon or some other waterproof material as well as paint that spot really well.

I understand trying to keep everything looking clean. I'd do that same as well if I were putting lights on my hoop. If you can, try and find some rubber grommets to fish the wire through at the hole. You can probably find them at home depot. This will keep the water out pretty well, but would second using silicon at the hole to keep any extraneous water out.

Another reason to zip tie is for those that use their hoops and tubes as an air tank.
