I just got back from Moab and ran mostly trails that were rated moderate and rarely used anything but 2hi. not sure why you would use 4hi or 4lo if you were not needing traction. I have lsd and I was amazed at the stuff I could do without being in 4wd. some deep sand washes required 4hi and steep descents I used 4lo.

Do you have a manual or auto? I don't know what Moab moderate trails are like, but if you were climbing any kinda of ledge/ rocks/ hill climbs, you'd most definitely want 4 low, unless you like riding the clutch all day. It's more of a control thing, not 4 low for traction.

Does it supposed to look like this under my jeep jk '13? I checked underneath to see how everything looked and noticed some parts rusted already! I just got this jeep a month and a half ago! Well it looks like I have a bump on my exhaust, is that normal?

I have a six speed, and use 2H most of the time. In mud I use 4H with traction control all the way off ( in 4H hold the button for 7 sec. till it chimes). In rock I use 4L. Winch when you have to.

Regarding the surface rust, I've heard on these forums its actually the metal end engineered to rust up like that. It's suppose to protect the metal underneath as it's just a thin layer of rust on the surface.

As for the thread, I generally run our trails on 4Lo. Also hear from our local clubs that you shouldn't run 4Hi on trails as it damages the trails. Believe the idea is that it is considerably easier to go quicker.

I only use 4lo on trails that require me to go slow and torquey. 3rd gear on level surface, 2nd gear for a climb, and 1st gear for a descent .

2hi for fun until i get stuck, then 4hi.

Jeep gurus:
Is it 'bad' to drift (anywhere from 15-30ish mph) while in 4hi?
edit: on loose gravel, mud, wet grass, sand, etc
