Self recovery gear first. You can get stuck any where even right beside a road or in your back yard. Winch and rigging, shovel, Hi-lift jack.

Second if you get away for civilization take a couple days survival gear appropriate to the terrain.

It's very basic, but buy a headlamp if you don't already have one. Infinitely useful for working on a vehicle in the dark.

Chainsaw is good. Medium size (18" blade) to cut through fallen trees on the trail, or for firewood if you get stuck.

Besides the winch and recovery gear for the winch I also have the following.

12V air compressor and Currie EZ deflator
Small army surplus shovel
8000 lb come along
48 inch highlift
Extra engine oil
Extra Diff oil
JB weld
Brake cleaner
Spare belt
Plus a small tool box.
I will be adding a wiring kit to fix wire problems in the future
1 Gallon premix antifreeze (note jug is empty from last trip to help a friend)
Flashlight
Head lite as shown in earlier posts.
Tire plug kit.

There is probably other junk in there but I cant remember what it is. Every time I go wheeling I tend to add something as I learn something new every time out.

I keep it all in a big plastic container that I strap down in the rear of the jeep.

I have never needed any of this stuff for myself, but I sure need it for the guys I go wheeling with.

Moral of the story, always wheel with someone and together bring some tools and necessities.
