Default Cover synthetic winchline?

I have read that leaving synthetic line exposed to direct sunlight may cause it to degrade over time. My last rig had a winch bumper that enclosed the winch so covering was a non issue, but for my JKU the winch line is fairly exposed.

Should I purchase a cover? I find them to be very ugly... but will live with it if necessary to preserve my line for when I need it!

I use the Warn 9000 neoprene cover on my M8000. It does the job perfectly and I've had people say "I should get one of those"

it was $50

Yes. Synthetic line will degrade over time as the UV protectant wears out. A cover is the easiest option. I run the neoprene cover, jeep my jeep in a garage and it wears out about once every 3 years. A vinyl cover lasts longer but doesn't look as good. It depends your priority.

Some synthetic winch line manufacturers claim that their line is UV resistant. Not sure if I would trust this as it can be expensive to replace. I doubt that the synthetic line included with the less expensive winches (Smittybilt, Rugged Ridge, etc.) is of the best quality, so it's best to play it safe.

"UV resistant" just means they have the coating on their line that defers sun damange.

I too think a cover is ugly sitting on the front but a 20-50 dollar cover beats a new 200+ line every couple years when it breaks. Not to mention your the one in a bind when it gives.....
