I know Fastenal sells different brands that have different WLL. Click here: http://www.fastenal.com/web/products...99837671&Nty=0

...and sort by "Working Load Limit".

I understand what you are saying, but if you put more trust into a product just because it says "4x4" on it I don't understand that. I just looked at the Warn site in particular and a few other 4X4 parts sites and all their shackles are listed as "For use with winch xxx6000 and larger" or "for loads 5,000 and higher". No ratings at all, no WLL, no failure ratios. Neither do they show if they are die cast or alloy. They are just more expensive.

So if you truly believe what you wrote above, then getting hardware at sources like the one I first posted is a better route to remove doubt because they at least provide some rating numbers for their products.

I thought that this would be an easy question but it took a little research. Most of the web sites only list the WWL (working load limit). That is what the d ring/clevis what ever you want to call them is designed to lift pull etc. (some are not rated for lifting by the manufacturer). The break strength for most of the ones that I could find a listing for was about 5 times the WWL. So a 5 ton shackle (10000#s) will fail at 50,000#s. Crosby has some good info in their catalog. So if you take a 9000# winch and use a pulley to get a 18000# pull you will have a problem with the 3 ½ ton (7000#) shackle that is commonly sold to us to connect everything. This is because the WWL is only 7000#, what is really needed is a WWL of 9 tons (18000#) for this kind of use.

I have had some training at work in this area; I am no expert on the subject, so if someone has some real expertise in these areas please fill us in.

I bought mine at Fastenal. They list the ratings for the shackles.

Ditto.
Black with gold anodized screw pins. They look great and have a working load of 6 1/2 tons.

I talked to the tech guy at Superwinch. He told me that the only D rings that they sell have a WWL of 9500 pounds. He said that they sell them for all their winches all over the world and that they have never had any problems with them. I probably am going to buy the ones from tractor supply less money and a higher WWL.
