Default How the hell does a grease gun work?

Im not sure if this is the right place to post this but....

I usually try and do my own work on my JK. I change the oil regularly, rotate tires, just most of easy wrenching, I like to do it myself.

I was getting a squeak somewhere under my rig and figured I'd get a grease gun and grease all the zerks. (I think that's what their called.) The salesman at the auto store stated "this gun should fit most of the fittings on your Jeep."

Figured it couldnt be that hard.

The grease just comes out around the fitting. Im pretty sure it is NOT going inside. The fittings are pretty close to the same size. I think.

I push the gun on really tight. Still grease everywhere.

Are you supposed to apply the grease until a little bit comes out the side of the bushings?

I tried greasing the driveshafts too. To no avail.

Again, Thanks for any input.

Are you holding the fitting on the zerk by hand? If not, you need to.

make sure the fitting slides over the zerk! it wont press the little ball down in the middle of the zerk and therefor grease will not be able to flow into it.

It is one of those guns where the fitting is on a non-flex tube. Im thinking the fitting on the gun is not small enough?

The fitting goes over the zerk, but I think it might be too big. Not small enough or tight enough around the zerk.

I have other size zerks on the jeep that I thought were bigger than some of the other ones, but it does the same mess.

Toad, I have the TF front drive shaft too. It has the smaller zerks on the u-joints and it doesnt seem to be getting grease into them either.....

bring the zerk with you to the autoparts store. there should be some different size flexible tubes. see which ones fit. i got mine with a couple needles and two tubes for 8 bucks

I learned, after wasting a good amount of grease, that my gun tightens around the fitting. If it is not tightened, the grease will just ooze around the fitting.

This sounds like what is going on with you. Hope this solved it, I felt very foolish after I figured this one out.

If you've never used them, your zerks may be stuck, or plugged. Use a little WD40 or PBBlaster (sp?) on them and clean them with a rag. This might clean em out so the grease can go in.
