I misunderstood your thread title... I pictured you driving off-road with the steering wheel in one hand and the Jeep operating manual in the other hand.

Automatic is better going up.

Manual has an advantage going down.

I prefer the manual.

Check out the attached thread. The basic idea is that the jeeps computer has an idle control that will maintain the throttle at idle RPM as long as you don't touch the gas pedal. Once you touch the gas pedal the computer turns off the idle control. I've used this feature many times and it is helpful.

Default Off Roading with a Manual

Upon seeing the tread title... Images flashed through my brain. What did he mean, exactly?

I'm thinking that the poster lives in Holbrook, here on Long Island, and there's lots of Manuals... Er, wait... I mean Manuels.

all i can say is, if you learn to drive manual WHILE off-roading, and you manage not to burn your clutch, you'll be a pro at manual driving!!!!. i learned to drive manual on hills , my dad's idea when teaching me (based on his saying "cry in the dojo, laugh on the battlefield") so i would learn the tough way and it paid off!

+1 for 6 Spd.
Jeep got it right with the crawler gear in the Rubi. Just back off the clutch very slow and it will not stall. Even when starting on mid grade hills just allow one foot to come off the brake while backing off the clutch. my wife was getting a kick out it last week when we were hill climbing with "no feet".

If your in 4lo and do stall it, no need for the clutch, just turn the key and off you go.
