Default Offroad newbie question

I am planning on my first trails next weekend in Sedona and Flagstaff AZ, and have some questions on the transfer case. The main trail will be "Broken Arrow" and I have an auto. Do I run the entire trail in 4LO and overdrive off? I also was wondering about properly shiffting into 4lo vs. 4 hi . I was wondering if i need to be stopped when engaging 4lo. Help?

Thanks for the info- ive used the 4HI-4wd in snow but have yet to run on the rocks.

I consider an automatic transmission temp gauge a "must have". Either a dedicated gauge with probe in the pan, or the AeroForce gauge that plugs into the OBD II port.

Adding an additional transmission cooler is a borderline "must have". I say borderline because if you can see the temp climb on the gauge, there are things you can do to bring it back down. A cooler will eliminate most of that need to monitor, though.

This is related to your question because improper use of the transfer case/transmission lever can bring on transmission overheating. The cooler and gauge will make things much more forgiving.

With an auto just run all broken arrow in 4L. The trail is pretty short, but a lot of great views. The 2nd half has all the fun stuff on it, but it is not too serious. The pink jeeps are all over that trail so 4L keeps you moving no faster than you ever need to on the trail. Following the pink jeeps you can even stay in 1st on 4L.

Here are some pics from that trail (it was raining our last trip)

Default Broken Arrow

Thanks all for the info- Ive done the Jeep tours a few times. Now that ive got my rig set up I wanted to tackle some trails on our own. I had hoped on getting the Evo skids and axle gussets welded in before we go but I think the trail wont be too hard-core on my Dana 30.
