When should I shift
AT what rpm should I shift during normal city driving. i've been doing in around 3000 rpm? Also when I was wheelin in a forest the other day my clutch got so hot it was a ctually smoking out the openings. I have not had problems since. Is it shot or did it just overheat?

Back when my JK was stock, I went by the manufacturer's recommendations, as given in the owners manual. I made a mental note of the corresponding RPM's and now that my JK has a different tire/gear combination I just use my tach to shift. My stock speedo-tach readings aren't 100% accurate, but 1st and second are above 2500rpm, 3rd is right at 2500rpm, and 4th and 5th are below 2500 rpm. Also, as I remember from when it was stock, the shift points would decrease from 1st to 2nd and from 4th to 5th, something like this: 2700rpm (1st), 2600rpm (2nd), 2500rpm (3rd), 2400rpm (4th), 2300rpm (5th). Bear in mind, this was just a mental note I took from when my Jeep was in stock condition.
An interesting point I want to say though...After I had my Jeep regeared with 5.13's with 35's, it really is a ton of gear for the size tires and the transmission. With that, I can now tell that the engine has a certain point where it likes to be revved at, and that is 2500rpm or below. Above this point, I can really feel the transmission/engine/stick start to vibrate much more and below that, it feels really smooth. It might be the powerband? Therefore, I usually try to go no more than 60mph on the highway now, until I move up to 37's, as that is just about right where I hit 2500rpm. Edit: bear in mind this is with the speedo corrected.

I shift at 3k, through all gears. It seems to be the perfect spot for smooth gear transition and decent mpg.
