JP JUNKIE, there are at least two of us on here from Nacogdoches, you should look up Maverick 1701. WE are wheeling in shiloh ridge, (about 30 mins from Nac.) on the 6th.

I've used a come-along and tow chain on more than one occasion myself!

Default Jack as winch

We used a hi-lift to bring a jeep that was up-side down on to the side . Before using to get it back on the wheels, 2 jeeps with winches showed up.

I will continue to carry the hi lift, chains, and come-a-long.
Got some pointers and will get more goodies.

I know own a winch

Didn't have a HiLift or winch once, just a chain fall, a couple of tow chains, 200 feet of loose sandy soil and just enough strategically placed pine trees to finally effect a self rescue. Man to be college age again.

If the size & weight of carrying a high-lift and the accompanying chain is an issue, a chain winch (same principal as the cable hand-winch someone here mentioned) is a good alternative as they're compact & fairly light & perfect for the lighter jeeps; I carry a Mud Mauler (Aussie brand). You wouldn't want to try to drag something like a big pickup up the side of a quarry with one though, as their weight limit is less than a high-lift I'd say due to their smaller size.

I cant say ive ever been in the situation where i needed to use the hi lift as a winch. I usually tend to dig out or stuff traction aids(tree branches, rocks, small animals, etc.) under my tires and try to drive out.

ZOMBIE THREAD!!!

Yes, but it is not adviceable if other alternatives are available. One has got to use what you got. A hi-lift is a great tool but a last resort winch.

Can't say i've ever done it. But I watched it be used to twitch a Blazer out of a ditch. Seemed to work alright
