Jack as winch
We used a hi-lift to bring a jeep that was up-side down on to the side . Before using to get it back on the wheels, 2 jeeps with winches showed up.
I will continue to carry the hi lift, chains, and come-a-long.
Got some pointers and will get more goodies.
I know own a winch

Didn't have a HiLift or winch once, just a chain fall, a couple of tow chains, 200 feet of loose sandy soil and just enough strategically placed pine trees to finally effect a self rescue. Man to be college age again.

If the size & weight of carrying a high-lift and the accompanying chain is an issue, a chain winch (same principal as the cable hand-winch someone here mentioned) is a good alternative as they're compact & fairly light & perfect for the lighter jeeps; I carry a Mud Mauler (Aussie brand). You wouldn't want to try to drag something like a big pickup up the side of a quarry with one though, as their weight limit is less than a high-lift I'd say due to their smaller size.

I cant say ive ever been in the situation where i needed to use the hi lift as a winch. I usually tend to dig out or stuff traction aids(tree branches, rocks, small animals, etc.) under my tires and try to drive out.
