Default winching

what is the proper way to winch?? meaning pulling yourself out, others out, ect?? got a firend who just got a winch installed today and had to use it. he wrapped the winch line around a tree and back onto itself. i told him this didnt seem too safe so he wanted to hook the line to my jeep and have me pull in reverse as the winch pulled against my jeep to get him out. of course i told him to go pound sand and refused so he went back to the tree method. he refuses to believe that the winch line could snap and fly back at either vehicle by pulling with another rig as its doing its work. please help me steer this guy in the right direction before he gets himself killed!!

his winch more than likely came with a manual that has some winching techniques.. tell him to read it. if you look in this very forum you will find winching techniques and safety information. Winches in general can be very dangerous if not used properly and safety precautions are not followed.

Default Winching Read

Here is a nice pdf regarding winching.

ooopps. You will have to do a search for billavista recovery then download the pdf wherever you find it. He is very thorough and educated in his writing.

and remember there isn't much being dead can teach the person who dies being stupid on the trail. Maybe send him the pdf and don't say a word so he doesnt have to admit he doesn't know it all already..lol

Buy a tree saver and/or a tow strap and keep it in your rig along with some kind of D-ring shakle. that way next time he gets stuck he can use yours and you will have one if you need it in the future. Also if it's a steel cable when the winch line gets taught but something of wieght on it like a coat or blanket or something that way if it breaks it will fall instead of whippin around.

treesaver X2

I went ahead and bought an ARB bag with a tree saver, snatch strap, snatch block and d-rings. The tree saver can also be used to attach to other vehicles that don't have good recovery points.
