Fairly new to this ... CAN SOMEONE explain this whole thing to me???
Is it caused after Jeeps are lifted??? Auto or manual transmission? I'm scared now anything to prevent this??
Why are guys pulling DS?? Like taking a look or removing them..... Sorry for sounding stupid.
Thx Rob from Ontario Canada.

I don't get this, do you guys have major ds vibrations? Or is it that Chrysler makes Jeep.

This is the recipe for disaster:
Lifted
Regeared
After market front drive shaft with single joint at the pinion, double cardan at the t-case
An adapter at the t-case that increases the distance of the double cardan from the t-case.
Front pinion more than a few degrees out of alignment with the drive shaft
Highway speed

That's when you are tooling along, fat, dumb, and happy, (no offense, it's just an expression), then you suddenly hear the onset of vibration. Then, all of a sudden, KABOOM!
It's happened to quite a few JKers.

The thing that would prevent this is getting the front pinion and drive shaft into alignment. The double cardan at the t-case requires the front joint to be in alignment with the drive shaft.
But then, that can't be done on a lifted JK because you would have too little caster.

Thanks for the explanation...I think I get it!
Got a couple of q's, though:

1. Is this happening to all lifted Jeeps, regardless of the height, or those above 4"? 2. Anyone hear of this occurring in non-lifted, stock Jeeps?
3. Is this problem confined to 4-Doors, or 2-Doors, as well?
4. How on earth does it catch fire? Would regular transfer case service (ie changing the fluids, etc.) help avoid this, or is that totally unrelated...sorry if that is a dumb questions!?!?!

Thanks

The things that add up to this happening are outlined in post #16.

1. So, no. Not all lifted JKs.
2. As far as I know, it hasn't happened on completely stock JKs
3. Lifts are pretty much the same on the front of 2dr and 4dr JKs
4. The OP had fire because the ATF+4 got onto the hot exhaust.

Lack of double cardan service can contribute to this, as can lack of fluid in the t-case.
Most often, it's the items listed in post #16.
