a short ram is usually not much more than a air filter attached to a very short intake tube. kinda a bad design since it will be taking in hot air from the engine compartment. a cold air is what you want. however a ram air intake places the filter or air inlet in direect of on coming air flow, the faster you go the more air is 'rammed' in your intake.
I just installed the Banks ram air intake and I was rather impressed. It certainly woke the engine a tad and looks OEM. I got exhaust and a Jet module in the mail as we speak.

Not really. Heres why. The actual air inlet is pretty much immediately behind the passenger headlight....so for me to take on water an risk hydro lock...I've got to be in water upto and beyond the headlights....the only way for me to do that would be to crash into a lake. knock on wood.
If hydro lock is you concern...see 'snorkel'

CAI on these trucks are a bad idea if you go offroad and splash in the puddles. MAN and I repeat MAN have seized the engine over the cool sound and 7 hp these things provide. If you crawl on the rocks or mall crawl your rig, strictly, NO problem. Otherwise, be very careful with these parts.
