Bestop Trektop Installed!!
Well, rain is coming this weekend with the arrival of "Danny", will check for leaks. Noticed that the rear window got a rub during shipping, called Q-tec and they said they would have Best top send one out under warranty...anyone have any idea as to the wait. It really is a small scratch, but I didn't pay for that option....
Overall I am pleased with the top, as mentioned, it is very difficult to get the header back on without unhooking the rear windows...other than that, no complaints...until the rain comes. It looks like best top moved the seam (that was leaking) forward, will have to see how it holds up.

Hello all,
Have been reading this thread for a while now. Love this forum. Wanted to replace the hardtop on my 2dr Sahara 09 to be able to go topless and enjoy the summer. After a lot of reading, bought the Trektop 3 weeks back mainly for the looks and the cost. I bought it from 4WP and they matched $476 price from 4WheelOnline"dot"com. I live in an apt complex, so I requested a friend to offer storage space in his garage. We built a table to raise the hard top 3 feet above the ground, so that his car can park under it.
My thoughts on this top so far:
Pros:
- Great top on tight budget
- Great look, really like the fast back look
- Sunrider feature
- Rides easier than hardtop, guessing due to less weight and shift in COG
- Bestop listens to its customers (learnt that from all the changes they incorporated, as proven in this thread)
Cons:
- Header noise. Gives me a headache sometimes driving home after work (tired).
- My biggest grief is "Going topless is not easy". Going topless was the whole reason I bought a soft top. Since I live in an apt complex, can't just lay it on the garage floor and leave. Storing it is a big pain.
- Can't go topless on a whim away from home, any opinion on this? I offer two reasons for this, first is the storage issue and second is the time it takes to install it back in case of sudden downpour.
- Its a b*tch to install in some areas, like the j-hook on the rear window
. Both the times I took it off, it took me 20 to 25 mins to install the 'whole' top and get it right. Not at all sure if I will get it under 10-15 mins with practice.
- Your knuckles wear out rubbing against the roll bar trying to wrap the sides of the top around the door surrounds and attach to itself via velcro. There should be a better way to attaching this.
- Not a big fan of the knobs on the footman loop.
So as you all can see I have split feelings about this top. Kinda love hate relationship going on. I was getting ready to buy a Bestop supertop mainly for the "topless" reason, but havent read good reviews on it in this forum. Does anyone know the return policy on the trektop? Is there one month limit from the buy date? Do I have to pay restocking fee? Is there a return policy for Bestop or is it the one the seller has?
If I have to return it within a month, then I have to make a decision in 3 to 4 days, else I can research a bit more on a better soft top. Please offer your opinions and counter opinions so that I can make a firm decision.

jpster,
I dont see why storing it is a problem. You should be able to store it in the back of your jeep. Just lay it on the ground, fold the windows in, then roll it up (I read that this works, i fold mine). That should fit in the back. The header and rear bar fits across the back and can be tied down. The rear window can also be rolled up and put somewhere in the jeep. Thats what i do anyway.
I know whay you mean about installing the rear window. Its is a pain in that ass. Trying to keep the j hooks together while zipping it pisses me off every time. I usually wind up sweating my ass off while putting the rear window on. That takes longer than installing the rest of the top.
As i said before, i expected this top to have some issues. I mean, its one of the cheapest tops you can get, but it does look cool. For me, as long as it stays pretty dry inside, i can deal with the small amount of wind noise and pain in the ass rear window........i guess......

Bestop should just use a full zip rear window IMHO. Much simpler.
If you are not happy with your top Bestop customer services is fantastic and if it is as bad as you are saying "flapping" at highway speed you should be able to get the latest greatest version. I am considering a call regarding the velcro door surround issue myself. I got the old version replaced due to a pinhole in the back window.

Another feature I dont like in the rear window is that it zips from top down. I have to slide one of my hands under the window to get inside and then hold it from inside while using the other hand to zip it down. You are in an akward position while doing this and kinda pisses you off
. I noticed that the factory top's rear window zip starts from bottom and I think is easier to zip.Edit: Totally agree with the zipper idea from Eatjeep.

Thanks for the advice Stupidface. Since you store it this way always, I trust it works. But doesn't rolling the top (with the side windows tucked in) cause kinks in the windows?

Yeah, the windows are all kinked up. I have 2 trek tops though. The old and the new version. I keep the old one in the jeep when im topless, for emergencies. I never really tried to roll the top, i was just suggesting that it works. i read somewhere that it works great and it sounded good. Just roll it up with a blanket to keep the windows in good shape.corey d
Ah! come on dude Stupidface. I thought you rolled your trektop all the time and now you say its hearsay. So you agree that rolling the top without getting kinks in the side windows is a definitely a chore
. Getting a blanket in there is a bigger chore
.
.

Im going to fix that post as to not lead anyone to believe that i roll and not fold.

We kinda have a love/hate thing with ours too. It is definitely a PITA to put on and take off and the rear window totally blows (J hooks and zipper going the wrong way).
The "updated" version we just got seems harder to put on. Storing it isn't so bad if you take out that bar the goes along the back. Our previous version, because we knew we were getting it replaced on warranty, we were kinda rough with it and had wrinkles in the windows from the get go. They never went away either. I think the biggest complaint I have is that, because the tailgate bar is such a pain to get on and off, we avoid having to take it off like the plague...so when offroading, and you need to get to the ice chest and such...it sucks.
On the up side, it looks cool, can be carried with you, and we don't have the factory soft top so it's all we've got
