So in trying to decide which to buy. I'm trying to get my rig ready for some of the more (not most) challenging trails. I need to give more protection to the differentials but now I'm stuck. I like the upgraded diff cover but how will the rest of the differential hold when (not if) it gets hit? I know that I will lose about .5"-1" of clearance with the skid but would it be the best option or will and upgraded cover be better.

I run the Rancho diff skid up front and just a cover in the rear. I plan to add the AEV Nth Degree skid to the rear in addition to the diff cover because I like how it protects the u-joint as well, similar to your pictures. Just food for thought.

PS. Who's skids are those?

I vote cover. Protecting the 1/2" thick steel casting is kind of pointless IMO especially at the cost of clearance.

They are the Rough Country.

I run the front and rear Rough Country skids and they're great. Clearance loss is minimal and you get a skid and a diff cover for the price of one. At stock height they've come in handy.

Front -- ARB cover.
Rear -- cover, which is part of the Full Traction CRC Link.
Both are tough enough for me, with minimal loss of height.
When in real doubt, I count on a spotter, or get out and check the line.

I have the OX cover up front and PS Bombshell rear. So far so good.

Where you live you will want the clearance. Diff cover and call it good.
