Most are in case your jeep rolls over, the stinger protects the radiator so that you can drive away under your own power.

They also protect from end overs when going down a steep hill. They'll allow the Jeep to sell on its side vs the roof in most circumstances. They also let you know where your bumper is in tight areas around trees or big rocks.
