Sorry in advance for the cell phone pics. Anyway, I've been looking for a way to hang backpacks in the back of my Jeep, and a good way to attach one end of a hammock to my Jeep at a decent height.

I found some climbing bolt anchors (see pics if you aren't familiar with them) and started looking for a good place to attach them to the stock rear sport bar. As it turns out, there were already threaded 5/16 holes on the bar. Total cost of project with hangars, bolts, and washers was about $10.50. I hope you like it. I won't have hammock pics until I get back up into the trees.

There is plenty of clearance for the hard top and I don't have a soft top so that isn't an issue.

I have no idea. Maybe someone with a factory soft top can comment on whether something attaches there. If you unzip the cover, there are actually holes all over the bar. The only threaded holes were where you see my hangers.

I can't wait to try out a hammock (or even two side by side). Just back up to a tree, hook everything up. And pull forward until you get the height you want. I have a feeling I might find a lot of other uses for these.

Thanks mk! Money is a little tight right now so I have to think up ways to tinker on the Jeep without ending up in the doghouse.

Just spent an hour at lowes. Mine is 5/16 but I can't figure out the thread. Neither 18 or 24 thread works without having to really crank. I have a 2010 so if anyone can confirm what works for them it would be much appreciated.

You are correct about the 5/16 (on my '09). I didn't catch my typo, and for that I am very sorry for any hassle that caused you (I'll go fix it now in my OP). I went with the tighter thread (which I assume must be the 24). There was paint on the inside of the sport bar nuts so I lubed up the bolts and it worked much better. I still had to crank, but it wasn't too difficult and I didn't mind since I don't attach anything to those nuts.

I hope that helps...sorry again for the typo on the size. I should have paid closer attention. I don't even think a 5/8 bolt would fit through the hole on a climbing bolt anchor (at least not the Metolius ones I used).

Might be an 8mm bolt, metric thread? Wouldn't be surprised...
