Default Feb 2011 Illinois Snow Storm

A couple weeks ago we got blasted with 18" of snow and crazy winds. A friends furnace quit during the storm, so I went over to help. No one was on the roads and it was a good thing I had my JK. I had NO issues busting through 2-3 foot drifts! The Duratracs were also amazing in the snow! LOVED IT!

Thought I would share some of mine from last year. We had about 5-6 feet at times throughout February. This was one of two times I had to abandon the Jeep and walk in....

Some years it gets annoying but so far this year it hasn't been near as bad. I am still trying to determine the best upgrade path for making the Jeep better in deep snow.

It really all depends on the snow conditions. If it's deep but heavy, then other than REALLY tall tires you're bound to get high centered because the heavy stuff won't allow you to sink down through it so your tires will grab a hard surface to run on. Not much you can do after it gets so deep. One time in my old willys pu, we had snow like this and the plows couldn't keep up. It was over 3 feet or so and heavy. I put chains on the front and just SLOWLY packed down a trail to the house.....you know, go so far forward, then back up, then a little more forward, then back up... It worked but it didn't last long because people in cars saw the tracks after me and thought they could just follow it.....NOT.

Now if the snow is deep but light, because it's been really cold, then you can probably bust through damn near anything because it's harder for it to pack down under the weight of the jeep. In this case a good set of tire chains will really get you almost anywhere you want to go. I can remember plowing through fresh powder where it was coming up over the hood and not getting stuck.

Condition of the snow is everything....
