Default Making a homemade bumper

So after a lot of thought I have decided to make a homemade bumper. Not only can I save money, but it can be a "Quality Time" project with my dad. I would like to make a bumper similar to the Rugged Ridge bumper:

http://www.ruggedridgeoffroad.com/xhd/jeep-bumpers.html

I like their design and how everything is modular and bolts on. As this will be my first homemade bumper ever, does anyone have any words of advice for me? Any suggestions regarding steel, thickness, etc? Thanks in advance.

I like the boobs on your gate... the rear bumper is very nice to.

Front looks well done but I really like the rear.

Jedi Knight,
My only advice is don't use your light saber to make cuts. They will look sloppy.

Default My bumper

I made mine out of 2x6 tubing with 3/16 wall. I personally dont like seeing the bolt heads on the aftermarket bumper so I welded plate and bolts to back of tubing. The winch plate is a piece of 3/8x8 plate welded all the way across on the top and string welded on the bottom. I added 4 gussets and 2 brackets at back of plate for more pulling power to keep plate from rolling up when winching. The tubes are 1 1/4 I think but wish the center was 2" but my local machine shop could not bend pipe that big. I did away with the factory skid and made one that bolts to back of bumper and to the slant where the factory one went to. I made it out of 1/4" plate. I just got through with the rear bumper that is made out of the same tubing with a piece of 1/4 plate on top. Then we added a tire swing to the bumper but havent added pics yet of the rear bumper.

There's been two sheets of masonite in my garage since I bought the house. I was just about to throw them out, but now they have a use. Bumper templates for the jeep and the scout.
