Default My solution to transporting mountain bikes....

So Ive been looking at multiple racks and really haven't found one that I really liked. So I found some of these block head fork locks for the beds of trucks at my local bike shop.
So I found a piece of pine 1"x6" in my garage and made a piece that would contour the sides of the Jeep and stay snug.

Drilled some holes, painted it black, mounted the hardware and VIOLA!!!

I used a small rachet type strap to hold the back down snug and it fits so perfect. Let me know what you think.

Have any issues with the board wanting rock back and forth when hitting bumps? Ever think of running a stud or bolt up through the floor to secure it or not needed?

I really dont think it will be neccesary. I fit it very snug, so with the strap across the backs of the bike there really is no movement at all. I have thought of making it more secure with bolts but I really dont think it needs it. Thanks for looking guys.

I did the same thing with a couple of $10.00 traps and a piece of 1x4 I had laying around. When the board is cut to fit snugly you dont get any movment so I agree theree is no need to bolt it down. I set mine father apart so I still have rooom in the middle to carry camp gear (and a cooler of beer and margaritas). When not carrying the bikes you simply remove the board and traps. I have not painted my board and must say yours looks good with the paint. I'll have to look at dont that to mine.

Nice write up.

That works for little bikes. For big bikes you need something a little more heavy duty.

I don't have a photo of the rack on my JK but here we are about to set off to Silverstar Bike Park.

The rack in question is a north shore bike rack. It carries 4 bikes, although you can get 2 and 6 bike styles as well.

In mountainbike terms, "Big bikes" refers to long travel heavy downhill bikes. So while it may be a large size, if you had say, 3 different bikes, that one being your cross country trainer, you'd call it your little bike, compared to say, your specialized Demo 8 "big bike".
