Default Patching holes in sheet metal?

Can someone either point me to a thread or tell me the best way to patch holes (drill holes to be exact) in my rear tailgate? Solder + copper + touch up paint best way to go?

What type of solder would you use? Would a soldering iron be sufficient or will I need to do propane?

I'm also looking to patch drill holes into the sheet metal of my tailgate. Ok if it's not perfect, just looking to eliminate the chance of rust.
