No.... Not off-road. I installed a trailer brake controller this week and tomorrow early I start out on a nice 700 mile ride with a trailer heavier than it should tow. Hopefully I make it....
You are a brave soul to tow that much with a 2 door. You are likely overweight with just the trailer. Hopefully the rear axle will take the stress.
Good luck and be safe.
Beyond the Nice looking El Camino.. That is a heavy Load - looks like a modded bumper be very cautious & hope that the 700 miles are flat level.. Good Luck, safe travels.
His armor is all aluminum but yes- still a load for a two door. I wish I had weighed the loads I'd hauled in the past. I'm not saying it was a good idea, but I did move the cargo from A to B without catching fire on the side of the highway.

I made it! Of course, being grossly over the rated tow capacity really slowed me down. Luckily my D44’s have 4.56 gears so the power was no issue at all. I was very careful to accelerate very slowly so as to take it as easy as possible on the gears and transmission. Transmission temperatures never went above normal and it stayed in 5th gear even climbing grades.
But SWAY with the ridiculously short wheelbase and the probably 6,000 pounds of (over) load behind it kept me going pretty slow. What should have been a 12 hour drive turned into a 16 hour drive. But I took it easy and kept everything straight. My El Camino is my heaviest toy so I figured I’d really give the Jeep a trial by fire. And it passed.
But... this was a one-trip-event. My buddy is coming down from Utah in a couple of days and I’m going to trade him the Jeep for his F250 for a few months for the remainder of the tow duties. I’ll miss my Jeep, which will be an incentive to get stuff moved at a much quicker pace.
Take it easy and be safe! Out of curiosity, how hard was it to install the brake controller?
Easy. Since my Jeep is an automatic there’s the rubber cover under the dash where the clutch rod would go so feeding wiring was easy. I ran my heavy blue wire through the frame and just used an adapter harness out back to match my trailers 7-pin adapter.
The brake controller can be mounted up to 70° up from horizontal so it’s sitting against the dash over my right knee. I was worried about my knee hitting it, as I’m 6-00, but it sits pretty flat against the dash face.
