Engines are designated "semi-wet compartments". You could have no hood and for the most part be okay in a rainstorm. It's flooding the engine that's a problem.

Got my new Rugged Ridge bumper! Thank you insurance money. With under 500 miles on the clock, some pizza delivery kid pulled out into my front wheel and bumper. Two months later I finally got some money to fix it.
