08's have a lot less issues (mine has had zero) than the 07's.
If you can pick, go with the later model.
2.5" BB with 35's should take you on anything you want to go on. I've gone everywhere I've wanted with 33's and no lift thus far.

Find a brand new 08. I have shopped a lot over the last month. You should find a nicely equipped 08 for a great price. Call around and throw out some lower than low prices. They want to get rid of them.

07 here no problems. Maybe because people are more likely to complain on a forum to find solutions . There is pleanty of time for the 08 to have problems. I think over all the JK is a solid vehicle. And the way things are going for Chrysler. I would rather have a vehicle that was built while the economy was strong. I wonder what corners they might cut to keep costs down.
My '07 has had no issues (knock on wood)... I say go for the best value so you can afford mods you otherwise couldn't. There are likely many '07s that are better vehicles than some used '08s. I bought mine with under 4k miles on it and saved thousands off the MSRP.
I was in the same boat as you. I went with an '07 6 spd. w/trailer tow pkg. It was a lot to try to find used, but worth the search. I wanted the '07 w/tow to get the 4.10 gearing that will help when the 35's go on (not available on '08 (except factory order or Rubicon)). 6 spd because of the auto tranny issues and the need to regear or replace driveshafts due to rubbing if you lift it. With the $ I saved over an '08, I bought an extended pwr. train warranty from my credit union. I got it from them since they said THEY would fight for me if their was a warranty hassle. Either way good luck. also 14,000 miles and no issues.

I have an 07 and have not had any issues....
