2012 1st oil change; oil recommendations?
#5
I have a brother in law that works for Mobile 1 and I used to try and buy the best oil out there. As a chemical/mechanical engineer, do you know what he does? He buys the cheapest oil the shop has. He says as far as protecting your engine, it's all the same. You are better off buying the cheapest stuff on the shelf and changing it every 2000 miles than you are buying $6 a quart synthetic and changing it every 3000 miles. Thats what I plan to do on my JK. Already done one change, bought quaker state because it was on sale.
My previous Jeep (which I hated) that I traded in on the JK had one oil change the entire time I had it. I traded it in with 96,000 miles on the odometer.

I changed about 900 miles. Whatever was on sale at the auto zone. The next one will be the free one from the dealer. After that (probably about 6k) I'll go with mobil 1 syn.

I am all for using a good conventional oil (Valvoline or Motorcraft) and using the intervals in the manual but Jeep is saying 8k mile changes (on the normal schedule which I actually fit) on the 3.6. 5w-30 takes a lot of additives to get dino oil to meet that 5w spec so I am thinking of going back to synthetic after 16k miles or so...I did 6k changes on my 3.8 with motorcraft 5w-20 and it looked good when I took it out, but 5w-20 does not take a lot of additives so there is less that can break down.
Some will probably get on here and say 3k miles changes with synthetic are the only way to go, but if Jeep is going to warranty out to 100k miles I do not think they are going to steer you wrong on the oil change interval. Dino oil keeps getting better and better, and I think the gap from synthetic to dino oil performance shrinks every time they release a new standard.

I just had the first oil change at 750 miles. The Service Advisor acted like I was crazy for changing it so soon. Just wanted to remove any metal shavings that might be in there. Since I have 4 free oil changes, I let the dealer use their oil with a Mopar filter. I have Mobil 1 Oil ready to go but have also read about waiting until 7500 miles before switching. My Corvettes came from the factory with Mobil 1 and I never had a minutes problem with them. I've used Mobil 1 in every vehicle since.
I'll probably change the oil again at 3000 then start changing the oil every 5k miles. At some point I may change to synthetic, probably after the free oil changes are used up and I start changing it myself.

Late to the game on this thread, but I was doing a search and found it.
AMSoil has yet to make a recommendation for their products in the new 3.6L. I am sure it will happen soon enough (a few weeks ago the 2012 wasnt even listed, now they are).
As for some of the posts above, Consumer Reports did a report on conventional oils maybe 10 years ago I read. They said that oils do not break down before 6,000 miles with normal use. The 3,000 mile number was simply to get you to change your oil more often.
As for AMSoil, I have a 2001 F250 diesel that I change every 12-15K with 260,000 miles, a 09 F150 with 96K that I change every 10K. All AMSoil, and I have yet to get a bad report when I run an analysis.
And no, I am not a dealer for them.
However, if changing your oil at 2,000 makes you feel good about taking care of your truck, that is fine too!
